Understanding Your Peaks and Troughs

The world is changing so fast and if you are like me, you are reading and researching, trying to make sense of what is happening. I have been helping clients unpack how the new world of technology, taking care of staff, dealing with product shortages and trying to understand the impact of how this new world impact on business. You may have already heard that I have banned the word recession and use the word reset instead. I have also banned the word crisis and use the certainty.

It’s no secret that we’re all working hard these days, but it’s not just the number of hours that can take a toll on our well-being. The real issue lies in the fact that we often spend too many continuous hours trying to balance multiple tasks at once. This constant multitasking can drain our energy and leave us feeling exhausted.

If you are constantly engaged in some form of activity, it can be easy to overlook the fact that you are draining your available energy reserves with each passing hour. This gradual decline in energy can have a significant impact on your overall well-being and ability to function effectively.

Think about it this way – every time you engage in physical activity, use your brain for work or make decisions, you are using up a portion of the energy that you have stored in your body. This energy is stored in the form of glucose, which is converted into fuel for your cells and muscles. As you continue to use this energy throughout the day, the level of glucose in your body gradually decreases, leaving you with less available energy to use.

This decline in energy can be especially noticeable in the latter part of the day, when you may feel tired, drained, and unable to focus. It can also have a significant impact on your mood and motivation, making it difficult to complete even simple tasks.

To minimise the effects of this decline in energy, it is important to take steps to conserve your energy throughout the day. This can include engaging in regular physical activity, eating a healthy diet that is rich in nutrients, getting enough sleep each night, and taking breaks throughout the day to recharge your batteries. By doing so, you can help to ensure that you have enough energy to power you through even the busiest and most demanding days.

Energy peaks and troughs refer to the natural fluctuations in our energy levels throughout the day. Understanding these patterns can help us turn good intentions into actions. The key is to identify when our energy levels are at their highest, and use that time to tackle important tasks, and when our energy levels are low, to focus on rest and rejuvenation.

To understand your energy patterns, it is important to pay attention to your body’s signals and to keep track of your sleep, diet, and physical activity. Keep a journal and note how you feel at different times of the day. This will help you to identify patterns and plan your day more effectively.

When your energy levels are at their highest, use this time to tackle important tasks that require focus, attention, and mental effort. This may include work-related tasks, personal projects, or physical activities. Try to avoid low-energy activities such as watching TV or browsing social media during this time, as they can drain your energy and make it harder to focus.

On the other hand, when your energy levels are low, take a break, rest, and engage in low-energy activities. This may include meditation, yoga, reading, or simply taking a nap. It is also a good idea to avoid caffeine or sugary snacks during this time, as they can disrupt your energy levels and cause further fluctuations.

Understanding your energy peaks and troughs is an important step towards turning good intentions into actions. By paying attention to your body’s signals, tracking your energy levels, and making healthy lifestyle choices, you can effectively manage your energy levels and achieve your goals.
