What do you say when you are asked “What do you do?”

Can you believe it… July has arrived?  I wonder what happened to the first 6 months of 2021.

I have been reflecting on my “chatterboxing” at last night’s Kapiti Chamber of Commerce networking meeting.   I stumbled over my “You Know When statement and my XYZ statement and I didn’t even try my “Juicy Title.   So, I have made it my goal this week to have all 3 off pat so people will lean in and ask for more information

In case you are wondering what I am rabbiting on about.

How often are you asked at a networking meeting “what do you do”, you know you should have a great answer that has them leaning in and saying “tell me more” but all you say is, oh I am Business coach.   The other person yawns, nods their head but there is definitely no leaning in.   Business coaching is the Job that I do it is not the business I am in.

Rather than talk about what you do, this phrase “You Know When forces you to describe an actual situation that illustrates the problem you solve and provides context for the solution.

This is my “You Know When” statement, and each time I get this right people do lean in and want to know more.

“You know when you get up in the morning and you have that nagging feeling in the pit of your stomach.  You know that today is going to be no different than yesterday or the day before…. you are constantly running on the hamster wheel fighting fires, putting band aids on the problems, and not had time to work on long term solutions.

Well, I show business founders how to take their business from chaos to cash, wean themselves from the day to day grind and really focus on finding the problems that are causing sales and profit loss.

Which means they can gear their business for growth, profitability, and longevity allowing them to enjoy the return on their investment of Time, Freedom and Financial Success”

MY XYZ statement is the good old elevator speech

I help X do Y so that Z

“I show business founders how to take their business from chaos to cash, wean themselves from the day to day grind and really focus on finding the problems that are causing sales and profit loss”

My Juicy Title is simply “People call me Their Business Yoda”.  That sentence certainly has people leaning in.

So, next time you see me… please ask me, “What do you Do”.

Now it is your turn.   Take some time out of your day and create your 3 statements that will have your target market wanting to know more.

Have an awesome July.   I look forward to seeing you either on Zoom, Meet up or at a live networking meeting.
